Working with Schools

A big part of our work is with the local Special Needs Schools. We currently work with four schools with forty six pupils attending weekly; accessing a total of fifty two days. They are able to take part in the activities we offer, which help them develop the skills and abilities they need to cope with life’s challenges, to interact with the wider community and enjoy and improved quality of life.

Demand for places at MK SNAP from the schools has continued to grow. In the last year we have increased the number of schools we work with from three to five; with an additional twelve pupils attending each week. One of these schools specialises in working with pupils with sever challenging behaviours; the other specialists in pupils on the Austic Spectrum.

None of these schools have the budgetary funds to cover the full cost of the training we delivery. Our policy is not to refuse places where there is a clear need for our services purely on the inability to pay the full costs involved. Each school makes a contribution to the costs but this still leaves us with a shortfall.

We try to meet this shortfall through fundraising activities, trust and grant applications.

The cost per person per day is £70.00
We deliver 1,980 days training per 36 week year (term time only)

Cost of training £138,600
Contribution from the Schools £ 27,088

Our work with people not meeting Statutory Funding Criteria

A number of people attending MK SNAP are deemed to be too able to meet Social Services criteria for support, but are not able enough to access or succeed on any of the training or support opportunities offered by the Employment Services, or other training providers. They are left in limbo, getting more and more disillusioned and isolated. It is not our policy to exclude people from our services purely on the basis that they cannot pay to attend. However, this means that we have to find alternative sources of funding in order to provide the services to these individuals.

We also offer free “taster” sessions to individuals considering using our services. These sessions allow them to try our services and for both parties to assess what help they need. From this we are to decide how many days a week they will attend, how long and then develop a specific individual training plan to enable them to achieve their objectives. We currently have three people permanently attending for a total of ten days a week unfunded.

We normally provide a further 200 days to people for four day “tasters” and short term placements.
